𝐀𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞, 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐡𝐨𝐞𝐤 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐬, the Goreangab Water Reclamation Plant (GWRP) became the first in the world to produce purified drinking water directly from sewage water.

𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐃𝐏𝐑 𝐦𝐚𝐲 𝐛𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐬, 𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐚, 𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 2.5 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞, they’ve been using this technology in their capital city, Windhoek, for 55 years – and with great success, too.

𝐌𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 – 𝐚 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐫𝐲𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 – 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐒 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞 2001, and during that time, water use on the river has outstripped supply by 33.6 million acre-feet. That’s bad news for the Southwest, home to some of the fastest growing cities in the United States.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐨 𝐑𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫 – 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐭 – 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐞. --- Running 1,450 miles from the Rocky Mountains to the Gulf of California, the river – once dubbed the “West’s plumbing system” – meets the drinking water demands of 40 million people across the United States and Mexico, in addition to irrigating 5.5 million acres of farmland, according to the Colorado Water Conservation Board.
